Who We Serve
Ujima is passionate about making all things equal from community to community throughout the nation. Beyond the known socioeconomic divisions, there are a number of factors that have created long-term physical, psychological, and environmental challenges for specific areas of our society.
Our primary focus is in serving communities in Los Angeles County that have been identified as disadvantaged or underserved. This designation has been defined in the state of California by scoring California’s census tracts based on 12 types of pollution and seven population characteristics.
These communities continue to face serious economic and social challenges, as well as environmental burdens. The challenges and burdens of poverty, high unemployment, air and water pollution, presence of hazardous wastes, and high asthma rates are the issues that Ujima strives to reduce and/or eliminate. We aim to strengthen these neighborhoods and improve the lives of the residents.
